Le Jogging in Paris

If any of you plan on getting out to enjoy the sightseeing in your running shoes, here's a short article  about the 'exercise scene' in Paris. I am currently training for a Half Marathon in May so am planning a slog by the Eiffel Tower at least 2 mornings.

Scrawl Crawl Information added!

I'm one of the Co-Coordinators for the Scrawl Crawl and will also be a participant. I must tell you, I'm super excited about the event. Sarah Towle has kindly lent her knowledge and expertise to give us some dynamite spots to visit during the crawl. And here's the cool part—they are are very historically significant and are featured in her interactive story app called Beware Madame La Guillotine. And there's a rumor she may even join us!

What is really amazing about Sarah is her success story. She has just released the iBook version of Beware Madame La Guillotine, but it all started because she has a passion to combine storytelling and history. Watch how she got the ball rolling with her Kickstarter Campaign.

We have a Facebook Group!

Once you have registered, you are eligible to join our Facebook group at Europolitan Conference 2013. It's the place to find a travel partner, a hotel roommate, someone to join you for a croissant et café. You will also find useful documents, like "Conference Etiquette," or "Critique Groups," both of which provide information to help you navigate the conference. Soon, we'll post maps, suggestions for sightseeing, and the conference schedule.

It's a great place to "meet" other attendees before the conference begins. You can post questions to the organizers. If you're familiar with Paris, suggest things to do. Planning to reconnect with old friends from previous conferences? Set up meeting times and places here.

Visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/119194734919132/ and click "Join Group." If you have any questions, contact Jennifer Whistler here.

In the meantime, here's a link to another blog that has a great article on Lenore Appelhans, one of our speakers.

While in Paris, why not visit a bookstore?

Well. Apparently, in the shadow of Notre Dam, you can find one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. The Paris bookstore is featured (along with some other pretty amazing places) in this article from Flavorwire: The 20 Most Beautiful Bookstores in the World.

It's called Shakespeare & Company.
And I haven't been yet, but it looks amaaaazing in the photo. So I'm adding it to my 'must visit while in Paris' list. How can you not go visit a place that uses the word 'intelligentsia'...oui?

Here's a little history:

Shakespeare and Company was opened by George Whitman in August 1951. George found himself in Paris after the Second World War, not wanting to return to America straight away. He enrolled at the Sorbonne to improve his French and found a small hotel room on Boulevard St Michel. During his studies he amassed a large collection of English books and used his room as a library and bookstore. It was only after a conversation with his friend Lawrence Ferlinghetti that George took seriously the notion of opening a bookstore in Paris. So, in 1951 he managed to acquire a small apartment opposite Notre-Dame de Paris, which was then converted into the front of Shakespeare and Company.

Set in the heart of Paris on the Left Bank opposite Notre-Dame, Shakespeare and Company has grown from a bookstore into an institution. It is situated in the Latin quarter which for centuries has been the centre of Parisian creativity and intelligentsia.
Since 1951 the bookstore has stubbornly kept its utopian ideals in a changing...[continue reading on Facebook]
